First bad run of the month

I’m not sure what exactly happened this morning. It was supposed to be just a regular run – 50 minutes at easy pace, which for me would translate into a little over 4 miles. Since I am trying to establish a new routine, I decided to do it first thing in the morning, around 6 am or so. Even though it was pretty humid, the temperature was definitely bearable – just around 78 degrees – nothing out of the ordinary. The first mile and a half went by easy, and then strange things started happening.

All of the sudden, I got really tired. My feet felt so heavy, like someone poured lead in my shoes. My heart started pounding really hard, you’d think I was racing, not casually jogging. I slowed down to a crawl my last half a mile. When I finally made it back home, I had to sit down on the steps in front of my house because all of the sudden my ears started to ring and then my head felt like someone just dunked me under water – I have completely lost hearing for a few seconds. I thought my blood pressure had dropped suddenly, but when I measured it, I got 100/60, which is my normal reading. When my head finally cleared and I went to take a shower, I realized I could not raise my arms up high enough to wash my hair. I had zero energy. It took a good amount of caffeine and sugary cereal for me to get back to the world of the living.

I’m still not sure what caused this morning’s incident. Maybe my blood sugar had dipped. Maybe the humidity got to me. But now I am definitely not hitting the road without my cell phone, just in case this happens again and I need to get some help.
